About The Masterclass
SA Futures Agency is delighted to host a one-day Causal Layered Analysis (CLA) Masterclass in Adelaide, led by world-renowned futurist Professor Sohail Inayatullah, one of the most influential voices in global futures studies.
This immersive workshop introduces Causal Layered Analysis (CLA): a powerful, transformative futures methodology that takes participants beyond conventional trend analysis to explore deeper causes, worldviews, and cultural narratives shaping the future.
CLA equips leaders, strategists, facilitators, policy professionals and change makers to:
Deconstruct current framings of complex issues at multiple layers of meaning
Surface underlying assumptions, metaphors and narratives that shape strategy
Co-create alternative future visions and strategic options
Strengthen decision-making in uncertain and volatile contexts
Developed by Sohail Inayatullah, CLA is a four-layer approach that examines:
Surface trends and problems (“litany”)
Underlying systemic drivers (“structural causes”)
Dominant worldviews/discourses
A deep myth/metaphor shaping our collective futures.
Used globally across government, business, education and civil society, CLA is both a sense-making and futures creation tool.
About The Facilitator
Professor Sohail Inayatullah is a futurist and academic, globally recognised for pioneering Causal Layered Analysis and advancing futures methodologies. He currently holds the UNESCO Chair in Futures Studies, which is based at the Sejahtera Centre for Sustainability and Humanity (Malaysia) and is a Professor at the Graduate Institute of Futures Studies, Tamkang University (Taiwan). He has authored and edited numerous foundational works in foresight and futures studies and is widely cited across futures research globally.
Across a distinguished international career, Professor Inayatullah has helped organisations, governments and communities better understand complex challenges by expanding how they think about, plan for, and create preferred futures.
